Dr. Z's Skin Care News - The Total
Picture - Spring 2003

It's finally
spring, and now is the time to spring ahead and think about your skin care
regime. Remember, just like the seasons change, so does your skin.
Therefore, you may need to change your skin care regime to suit your
skin's changing needs. The change in weather can produce a "combination"
type of skin, which will require product changes or additions. For
example, you may need to use a lighter moisturizer, such as the Light
Textured Moisturizer. Or you may need to add an exfoliating glycolic
acid product, such as the AHA Rejuvenating Gel 15, which will help
shed the dead skin cells of winter. With increased daylight and outdoor
activity it is important to remember about sun protection by using the
Moisturizing Sunscreen 25.

Whether you are 20, 30, 40 or beyond your skin has
special needs at each age...
In your 20's skin is at its prime. Collagen and
elastin, which are responsible for strong and flexible skin, are at their
optimal levels. Circulation is efficient and skin exfoliation occurs
without much help. The worst enemy at this age is the sun (the cause of
90% of wrinkles years later). The best regime is cleansing, minimizing
breakouts and daily moisturizing.
In your 30's the skin is most transitional. Sunburns from years
prior reveal themselves in the form of fine lines, especially around the
eyes and mouth. Exfoliation slows down and the rate of skin cell renewal
slows. Stress is much higher and breakouts can occur, known as "adult
acne". This is time to add alpha hydroxy acids or "AHA's" to your skin
care regime. AHA's act as skin rejuvenators which literally change the
texture of the skin by dissolving the "glue" that dead skin cells adhere
to. They exfoliate the top layer of skin as well as stimulate collagen and
elastin fibers. All this results in younger, smoother looking skin.
Daily sunscreen application is also recommended.
In your 40's and beyond your skin begins its natural aging
process and the damage caused by the sun in your youth begins to reveal
itself in the form of "age spots", which respond to the AHA Spot
Vanishing Gel. Collagen and elastin production have started to
significantly slow down. Now is the time to add vitamins to your skin
care regime, such as the Vital "C" serum or Advantage "A",
a vitamin A cream. The use of an eye cream, such as the Ultimate
Eye Cream is a must!!!

It's never too early to start healthy skin care habits. Children should
start with good hand washing habits, including the use of soap and a
fingernail brush. Children as young as 5 can learn to wash their face with
mild soap or a gentle cleanser, such as the Gentle Blue Cleanser.
The application of a daily sunscreen establishes a good habit that will
have lasting effects. If your child has sensitive or dry skin the use of a
moisturizer is important. As your child gets older it is even more
important to establish good skin care habits to avoid long term acne
problems. It is easier and faster to prevent acne then it is too get it
under control!!! The earlier skin care habits are established the less of
a "chore" it becomes to the child, instead it is second nature, like
brushing teeth!!

The American
Cancer Society estimates that over 35,00 people will be diagnosed with
malignant melanoma, a sometimes fatal form of skin cancer. With early
detection, such as yearly visits for a complete skin exam and self exams
you can help your doctor help you. Every 3 months, with the help of
someone, check your entire body for moles that have one or more of the
following signs:
Asymmetry - one half of the mole does not
match the other half.
Border irregularity - mole edges are
ragged, notched or blurred.
Color - irregular color, such as varied
tan, brown, black or sometimes white or red.
Diameter - larger than a pencil eraser.
